Authors Stop by Anderson’s Bookshop
Actress and podcaster June Diane Raphael and policy advisor Kate Black stopped by Anderson’s Bookshop to talk about their new book, “Represent: The Woman’s Guide to Running for Office and Changing the World.”
“After the 2016 election I was feeling so devastated about Hilary’s loss. And my sadness really quickly turned to anger and then to motivation, and I wanted to do something more. And I thought if this guy can run for office then maybe I could too. So I set out to find Kate and write a book on how a woman might approach that,” said Raphael.
“Represent” Book
The book serves as a guide for women who want to run for political office and may not know where to start.
“Represent” answers questions like where to run, how to balance family and campaigning, and how to manage social media.
Readers can learn about it all with the infographics, advice from women in office, and even through Raphael and Black’s personal text messages.
“I think the overarching goal of the book is to say ‘you can do this,’ that running for office and holding public office is something all of us should be able to do and that all of us should be able to step into,” said Black.

And Becky Anderson is one Naperville woman who did that by serving on city council from 2015 to 2019. She also ran in the 2018 Democratic primary for the 6th District seat.
She believes this book is a good resource for women who want to run.
“I think it encourages you, if you want to make a change in this world and be passionate about what you believe in and find out what those passions are that, do it. Don’t wait around. This book will help you, encourage you, give you the questions you need answered and get you started on the right path to running for office,” said Anderson.
The event ended with a book signing.
