Naperville Now 01-31-19

Brantley Gilbert Coming to Ribfest:

Bottoms up Naperville! Country star Brantley Gilbert is coming to Naperville Ribfest this summer. The singer/songwriter will appropriately kick off “The Weekend” with a Friday night performance on the Navistar Main Stage on July 5. Tickets go on sale February 8th at 10 a.m. on ribfest.net.

New Business for Vacant Dominick’s?:

There’s a chance that a long vacant Naperville Dominick’s could be filled by a new business. The former Dominick’s in the Wheatland Marketplace shopping center closed in 2014, but had been under lease by Albertson’s. The parent company of Jewel-Osco was resistant to filling the space in order to stave off potential competition to the Jewel just up the road on Route 59. The lease was not renewed as of November 30, which means the space is open to new business. Mayor Steve Chirico says the city is currently in talks with a boutique grocer and a national fitness center group to possibly fill the space.

Water Pipe Thaw With Heat Gun Sparks Fire:

A fire broke out just before 11 p.m. last night on the 1100 block of Nashua Drive, when a resident attempted to thaw frozen water pipes with a heat gun. The fire spread through the kitchen ceiling but was extinguished, and the house was deemed habitable. No one was injured. Fire officials remind residents that if their pipes freeze, they should not use an open-flame device to thaw them.

Slippery Roads:

The cold is breaking but some snow showers are coming this evening, prompting city officials to remind drivers to use caution. The extreme cold makes road salt less effective, so roads may be slick through tonight into tomorrow morning.

Lange Murder Investigation:

Naperville police are asking residents for any information they might have in connection to the now two-year investigation into the unsolved death of Matthew Lange. The 39-year-old was shot to death in his car in the parking lot of Scullen Middle School on January 27, 2017, as he was waiting to pick up his son from Polish school. He was in a silver 2013 Hyundai Elantra, similar to the one pictured. There’s a $45,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction. Please contact the Naperville Police Department if you can help.

NCC Men’s Basketball Game On:

Despite North Central College being closed today and classes being cancelled, the men’s basketball team will still host its game tonight against Augustana College. The Vikings come to town as the number one ranked team in the country. You can watch the 22nd ranked Cardinals go for their 7th win in a row at 7pm live on NCTV17 and NCTV17.com.
