9/11 Remembered | First DuPage Human West Nile Case | DuPage Cnty Board Member Won’t Seek Re-Election

9/11 Remembered:

Flags around Naperville are at half-staff today as our city and nation remember 9/11. The Exchange Club of Naperville will hold a remembrance ceremony at 6:00 p.m. today to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the attacks on our county. The event will take place at the Commander Dan Shanower Memorial, which sits along the Riverwalk just behind the Naperville Municipal Center. Shanower was a Naperville native who died in the attack on the Pentagon.

DuPage County First Human West Nile Case:

DuPage County has reported its first human case of West Nile virus this year. The DuPage County Health Department says a Lombard woman in her 40s contracted the mosquito-borne virus, becoming ill in late August. This is the fourth human case of West Nile in Illinois for 2019.

DuPage County Board Member Won’t Seek Re-Election:

DuPage County Board member Jim Healy will not seek re-election next year. The longest-serving member of the board, Healy represents District 5, which covers most of Naperville, along with parts of Aurora, Warrenville, Lisle and Woodridge. He’s served on the board since 1998, and will end his run on November 30, 2020.

Fair Lady Award:

Congratulations to Karen Jarczyk, Naperville’s 2019 Fair Lady. Jarczyk was recognized by Fair Lady Productions for her work as Prevention Director at 360 Youth Services. This is the eighth year of the event. Several past recipients of the award were in attendance last night at Center Stage Theater to support Jarczyk, who said she felt humbled by the entire experience.

North Central Among Best Colleges:

And congratulations also to North Central College, who has made U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” list for the 26th consecutive year. The college is ranked number 13 among “Best Regional Universities” in the Midwest. It’s also climbed up ten spots from last year to place tenth on the list of “Best Undergraduate Teaching Programs,” and got a nod as a “Best Value School,” coming in at number 27. The national rankings are made using 15 different factors of academic excellence.
