At the latest city council meeting, the group voted to lower the tax levy.
This through an over $4 million abatement from the 2016 tax levy of about $50 million. That’s a $200,000 decrease compared to last year’s levy.
“The tax levy that went through in December abated portions of it, but it did not abate a sufficient amount to allow us to arrive at a lower level this year than we did last year, and this abatement ordinance accomplishes that,” explained City Manager Doug Krieger.
The average homeowner in Naperville with a $380,000 home will see a decrease of about $76 on the city component of their property tax bill.
Also approved at the meeting was the rezoning of a property in Downtown Naperville.
Council voted 6-2 to allow North Central College to re-zone the property located at 40 East Jefferson Avenue from secondary downtown to college university district, despite Councilwoman Obarski’s plea to hold off on the re-zoning.
“I’d rather have a little bit more foresight and to see those kinds of plans come forward because of the location and the topography,” said Councilwoman Rebecca Boyd-Obarski.
The college plans to renovate the building located there to house faculty offices and meeting rooms for about ten staff members with the college.
